Zeke's boyfriend, Jordan, left just before they graduated from college, leaving nothing behind but a note. Devastated, Zeke tried to find him, but short of registering him as a missing person, nothing worked. Finally, he enrolled for training with the InterStellar Regulation's Enforcement Division and attempted to move on despite the pain, but he never managed to give up hope of trying things again, if he could only find Jordan -- which was, after all, the first step.
Six years later, Zeke is shocked to see Jordan's name under a list of recipients for a prestigious research award. Cleaning out his savings to secure a ticket at the overbooked reception ceremony, Zeke sets off to show Jordan just what he's been missing all these years.
An interesting look at a variation on "the one who got away", quite literally, this story is short, emotional, and made me smile. There is just enough background for the characters to become real, but the focus is firmly on the present. And a very painful present it is for Zeke, where all he has is hope that he will be able to make up for a past mistake that wasn't even his. With some very touching details as the lovers reunite, as well as a few that made me laugh, this is a touching story with very loveable characters.
Zeke tells the story, and he is desperate to reconnect with Jordan, who inexplicably and suddenly left him without a trace six years ago. Zeke's thoughts as the moment of reunion comes closer are a mix between confusion, desperation, and anger, but there is also tremendous hope.
When the two do reunite, there are some awkward moments, but all questions are ignored in favor of the more – physical aspects. This worried me a little, but I think it also made sense; people would react that way if they are very emotional, and there isn’t time for more in a short story. I think it would be interesting to explore "what happens next" in a longer piece, since both men have enough potential for me to come back to them.
If you like short, hot stories with a lot of emotion, if you're a fan of reunions, and if you're looking for some feel-good moments and a few laughs, you will probably like this story.
