Nico Cordero is a young shifter still learning the scope and limitations of his powers, without any guidance or information to go on. He can only take the form of a house cat. When he notices a dark specter lurking in the apartment across from his, he needs to figure things out fast if he intends to save the kindhearted nurse who lives there.
There are all kinds of myths attached to black cats, including the fact they can see ghosts, so it was fun to read a story about a man who shifts into a cat that can see ghosts. Not that Nico is happy with the situation, but there isn’t anything he can do about it. When something goes wrong in his neighbor’s apartment while the man is out at work, Nico comes to the rescue. What he finds is unexpected, but Nico is good at dealing with “weird” stuff. The help he gives Micah, the nurse from next door, is invaluable and changes Micah’s life.
If you enjoy short, mysterious stories, if a cat shifter and a nurse who thinks he is crazy sound like an interesting combination, and if you’re looking for an almost-bittersweet read that contains a message of hope, then you will probably like this short story.
