Azaran~
I was born a dragon rider. A member of the Brotherhood of Ormarr, son of Cadmar, and the eldest of four sons. I was raised to defend the innocent and protect the secret of the dragons, but when I was eighteen, my parents were brutally murdered and the training and care of my brothers fell to me. My entire adult life has been spent helping my brothers grow into the strong, brave dragon riders they were born to be. Now that the youngest of my brothers is close to adulthood, the last thing I need is someone else to worry about—someone else to be responsible for. If only the handsome doctor fate had chosen for my mate wasn’t so perfect for me.
Toby~
AlI I ever wanted was to help people, that’s why I became a doctor, but I quickly learned that modern medicine was more about the all-mighty dollar and less about saving lives. It wasn’t long before I was doubting my life choices. A vacation to the ocean was supposed to leave me refreshed and ready to get back to work, but instead, I found myself pulled into a world I never knew existed. A world where dragons are real, men fight like medieval warriors, and my soulmate has his very own bat cave. Azaran thinks the last thing he needs is a mate to worry about. Good thing I don’t need anyone to take care of me. My sexy dragon rider, on the other hand, needs someone to take care of him, and I think I’m just the man to do it.
This first book in the ‘Brotherhood of Ormarr’ series is a great introduction to an alternate reality which is very similar to our world, except there are dragons, dragon riders, and the magic that makes them work together. It took me a while to get used to the “rules” and the politics of this world – but that is half the fun when reading fantasy and the slight initial mystery is a good thing as far as I am concerned. The story is told in alternating first person by Azaran, eldest of four dragon-riding brothers, and Toby, a medical doctor on vacation in the idyllic small town of Dargum’s Cove on the East Coast of the US. Their tale is entertaining, suspenseful, and has some interesting villains with an agenda of their own.
Azaran has a lot on his plate. Ever since their parent’s death he has been responsible for raising his three younger brothers and ensuring they become strong dragon riders. They are members of the Brotherhood, but what that means only emerges slowly and is pretty cool. Azaran is used to taking care of everyone and does not see having a mate as potential support – he expects Toby to be another burden. Even though his dragon likes Toby as well, and she definitely holds strong opinions, Azaran is reluctant to open his heart.
Toby is fed up with the workings of modern medicine where financial interests outweigh his patients’ needs on a daily basis. When his boss “forces” him to take a two-week vacation because he spoke up to save a patient’s life and annoyed the finance guy, Toby ends up far away from his home in Maine. The small town on the East Coast looks peaceful – that is, until he discovers there are dragons! Not only that, one of the riders is supposedly his soul mate! It is a lot to take in, but Toby is a caring soul with lots of empathy to go around, so it’s not too difficult for him to make a decision about his future.
When modern-day science confronts fantastical magic, all kinds of things can happen. Toby and Azaran like each other from the start, but there is more than one obstacle in their way. There is also more to the story than the unexpected romance between Azaran and Toby. It turns out the dragon riders have politics and fights all their own, and it looks as if this tale is not the end of it…
If you like alternate realities that hold a few surprises, if you think an always-responsible dragon rider deserves a break when he meets his nurturing soul mate, and if you’re looking for an adventure with a few surprises, then you might like this novella. I am looking forward to the next three stories to be published in this series.
