When Avery takes a job as an escort at the Kline Agency in Manhattan, he expects to work long enough to help fund his younger brother's college tuition and then he can move on. However, a chance meeting with an artist, Milo, changes Avery's expectations. At first, Milo is interested in drawing Avery, but then he decides using Avery as his canvas holds more inspiration for him.
Rodney, a very rich older man has his sights set on Avery and making him his exclusive escort. But as Avery and Milo spend more time together, Avery begins to have feelings for the aloof artist. When Milo loses his main sponsor, he can no longer afford Avery's services, and Avery is forced to choose between having a relationship with Milo or the rich clients of the Kline.
Men (and women) go into the escort business for about as many different reasons as other men and women have for hiring an escort. When both parties’ needs and ideas match, the agreement is like any other business relationship—fair, defined, and probably limited in duration. At least, assuming there exists a degree of equality of power and/or an agency is involved to help broker the deals, like the Kline Agency in these stories by Ana Raine. In this third book of the series, the story is a little more complicated because the characters have different expectations going in than what they find once they meet.
Avery goes into the job as an escort with a definite goal: earn enough money to help pay for his brother’s college tuition, then get out. He sees it as a simple way to earn money, and spending time with men who pay him for his company is not a problem for him. What he does find more difficult to deal with is the actual interest in more that comes from one client in particular. On top of that he meets Milo, a man who fascinates him, but seems less interested in Avery than the other way around. Milo is still extremely possessive of Avery, but as a model, not as a lover, and that is utterly painful and very confusing for Avery.
Milo is an artist. He is very talented, but extremely quirky. He has had some previous success, and found a sponsor, but when that source of money dries up, because Milo is not willing to give in to the man’s commands, Milo can no longer afford to pay for Avery’s time. Milo definitely has his own agenda, and I was kept in suspense until the very end as to what the heck he really thought and believed.
If you’re looking for a slightly quirky story, if you like dark, mysterious artists, and if you’re looking for a fun story with lots of sexual tension and heat, then you will probably like this short story.
