He descends from a witch they burned.

With graduation on the horizon Seiran should be flying high with plans for the future. But his lover, Gabe, is saddled with a new vampire apprentice to babysit, leaving Seiran lonely and looking for direction.

Gifted with his long dead father’s mansion in California, it provides just the escape Seiran needs, and perhaps a chance to learn about the man he never got to meet. A man who died a gruesome death being burned at the stake before Seiran was born.

But history isn’t always kind, and Seiran discovers his father was embroiled with a coven of witches set to overthrow the Dominion. A battle which led to his father’s demise and a legion of male witches secretly siphoning power using black magic fueled by murder.

Seiran needs to find a way to break the cycle of blood magic, and bargain with the fae to stop a death spell, all while someone is pulling the strings from the shadows.

Book Review

It was with no small measure of trepidation that I began 'Ascendance', book four in Lissa Kasey's 'Pillars of Magic: Dominion Chapter' series. Make no mistake, I love this series and all of its fascinating characters and plot lines. I just wasn't sure if my heart could handle Sei being almost killed again, or Gabe, or Kelly, or Jamie. Every time I turn around, something is trying to off one of my guys! Lissa, I adore you, but can you give a girl a break, please? *grins*

Is there something wrong with me that I adore Sei's contrary and ornery personality, which is mixed so beautifully with touches of vulnerability? Weeks of Gabe not spending time with him, instead mentoring Sam, and when Sei gets a notice in the mail that he's been left a house and estate in California, Sei takes off without telling anyone. Of course, that doesn't prevent Gabe, with Sam, from tracking Sei down. Sei isn't so ready to forgive and forget though, plus there's a number of fascinating, and terrible things happening in, and around, the house and on the grounds.

Sei gets more than he bargained for when he inherited this house that used to belong to his father, but was kept in trust for Sei by his uncle. It seems that Sei's family is more entwined with the Ascendance than he'd previously known. Unfortunately, he also discovers that the Ascendance has been using evil death magic to steal power from others and give to boy witches born with smaller amounts of magic. Sei's father was never involved in this, but his uncle was, although the Ascendance of today is not what his grandfather had intended. When his uncle's will is read, Sei is shocked to find out his uncle has left him a seat on the Ascendance council, with the restriction that if he turns it down, the twenty million dollars he's also been left, will revert back to the Ascendance for their use. Meaning they can continue to abuse and pervert power onto young boys.

I can't believe I'm going to say this, since each of the previous books has been filled with action, excitement, and massive quantities of adrenaline, but I think this book tops them all. Watching Sei take control of the Ascendance and begin to make the changes necessary for it to be the organization it was originally supposed to be was, frankly, inspiring. Seiran Rou is an amazing young man, and he's definitely one of my most favorite characters. This book took exciting to a whole new level with fairies, death magic, Sei's family history, his new knowledge of his father, and the GreenMan.

So, my final thought? Lissa, can you hurry up with the next book, please?
