One frigid winter night a week before Christmas, college student Will stumbles into a church during choir practice, bruised by his own father’s hands. He’s out of the closet now—there’s no going back since his fundamentalist father learned the truth—but he’s also out of a home, a family, and a future. Will has nowhere to turn. No one to care.
Except . . . Will’s roommate, Quinn, cares. Maybe too much. He’s been attracted to Will since they moved in together, but never dreamed his crush was gay. With Will’s life in pieces, Quinn doesn’t want to push. He also knows he has more experience than Will, who’s never even been kissed.
Then Will’s father makes a reappearance, and Will has to learn to trust his heart more than the voices of his past. But it’s the season of miracles, faith, and hope, and Quinn is determined to teach Will how to love and be loved.

Often the things we worry about the most never happen. This is part of the message of 'Angel Voices' by Rowan Speedwell. It's a short, poignant story, aptly named since Quinn is a guardian angel of sorts, helping his shy roommate Will after he's beaten and thrown out on Christmas Eve for being gay. Will comes back to school thinking that even though it's a temporary fix, he has nowhere else to go. Quinn takes Will under his wing and shows him that his life is not over, that there are alternatives that don't involve his father's influence or control. He introduces Will to his eccentric but wonderfully loving family with whom Will finds acceptance and affection, and provides him with a contrast to his own family. Quinn also helps Will discover who he is and helps him accept and appreciate it.
This delightful Christmas story is short and sweet; it's well written and has memorable characters and a meaningful message: the best way to be happy is to live life openly and honestly. Don't be influenced by the hateful, manipulative attitude of those who try to tell you that being who you are is wrong. Those who nurture us, who belong in our lives, will always love us regardless. I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to anyone who believes that the fastest way to happiness is through being truthful with yourself and others.
