Book Blurb

Five years ago, Phoenix lost his lover Gabriel, his angel, in a horrific hate crime. All Phoenix wanted was to follow Gabriel into death, and he struggled a long time trying to get his life back together. All this time later he still hasn’t been able to put the past behind him and forget about the love of his life.

On the anniversary of Gabriel’s death, Phoenix’s apartment building catches fire. Will Phoenix do the reasonable thing and save himself, or can he rise from the ashes to reunite with his beloved angel?

Book Review

It is never easy to lose someone you love, but what Phoenix has endured in this story is horrific because his lover, Gabriel, was killed due to the hatred of bigots - and Phoenix saw it all. The contrast between the happiness Phoenix and Gabriel experienced just before their world ended and the terrible way Gabriel had to die makes the story especially poignant. How are you supposed to recover from that? I don’t think you ever can.

Phoenix has struggled with life alone for five years. His family, understandably, wants him to move on. His friends urge him to socialize and return to the living. But there are cases where love runs so deep that it just isn’t possible for someone to move on. The author does a great job describing Phoenix’s depth of despair and why there is nothing left for him.

Had I known how sad this story is, I might not have read it – and would have missed a beautiful tale of true love and an unusual message about hope. The ending is not unexpected, but the degree to which I felt it was the right one surprised me. If you are ready for a beautiful, sad yet hopeful read that might just make you cry, then you will probably like this short story despite – or because – of the message it carries.
