Book Blurb

As the Second World War sweeps across Europe, tens of thousands of Allied soldiers are trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk. The fear of so many triggers old magics and summons selkies, the seal people. When England sends boats to rescue the trapped men, the selkies guard them. In the midst of this chaos, Daithi, a selkie, is drawn by the magic directly to one redheaded Scot. He would love nothing more than to kidnap the human who stole his heart with a look and carry him off to the sea, but is that fair to him? Still, with the Luftwaffe attacking constantly and rescue attempts slowing, it may be their only chance to survive.

A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2014 Daily Dose package "Mended".

Book Review

Selkies are interesting creatures of myth and the paranormal world. They are shifters, in a way, but with lots of special “rules” and a whole mythology behind them. Not only is one of the main characters in this story a selkie named Daithi is also the narrator. To see the human world, at least the parts he interacts with, from a non-human perspective was fascinating. And the insights into selkie thinking and history he adds to the proceedings was amazing!

Daithi is one of many selkies who hears the call for help from the many humans involved in the Battle of Dunkirk. He does not know the details, nor does he understand all the technology (like sea mines, airplanes, and bombs), but he knows humans are suffering. And one of those humans is his perfect mate. There is only one problem: once they have met and the human has clearly been temped, he stays out of the water. Daithi has no way of physically reaching him.

When the human is wounded, Daithi rescues him and, with the help of a few other selkies and his magic, manages to save him. On the slow road to recovery, there are many issues (like the human refusing to talk to Daithi), but the constant physical proximity as the human heals slowly erodes the emotional barriers the man has erected. I loved the developing romance and the ending is amazing!

If you like paranormal stories about mythical beings interacting with humans and all the issues that come with an interspecies relationship, if you enjoy a slow-burning romance where both men need to overcome cultural issues before they can be together, and if you’re looking for a fascinating read which starts off with lots f pain before it turns sweet and finally hot, then you will probably like this short story.
