Doug's happy to stand up at his best friend's wedding, even if it reminds him that he's no closer to finding his own partner. After a missing flower delivery, a fire, and a mad dash around town to find alternatives that don't come from a convenience store, Doug discovers that he might not be single for much longer.
This story is also in the They Do M/M Anthology.
Weddings, and especially the preparatory stages, can be stressful for all concerned, and this story focuses on the trials and tribulations some of the groomsmen go through. It is a nicely done, slightly different angle to the usual focus on grooms or wedding planners. And with a main character and narrator as cute and blithely unaware of what is going on as Dog, it made for a very amusing and entertaining read.
Doug and his thoughts about weddings made me laugh right from the start. He must be a good groomsman/best man, and/or very popular, because he talks about all the weddings he has been to. However, the minute all his straight fiends “finally tied the knot”, marriage equality means that now a lot of his gay friends want to get married as well. At this, rate, it will never stop!
The one bright light is Garth, who has become sort of a partner in crime, He and Doug manage all the catastrophes pretty well, and have done for a few weddings now. At this one, it all comes to a head after Doug successfully solves the problem of the missing flowers. I simply adored the twist, and have to say that I found it utterly romantic!
If you like stories about men who think they will never find the right partner for them, if you enjoy reading about all the things that can go wrong at a wedding, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read with a large side of romance, then you will probably like this short story.
