Jobeth O'Brien awakens on the floor of her kitchen, her battered face and the memory of an angry visitor tells her that she is close to something important in her investigation. In between this surveillance and delivering newspapers, her beloved '62 Falcon is the scene of middle-of-the-night romps with a lonely socialite, who gives her more than she bargained for. Her quest for the truth pits her against errant husbands, a modern-day madam with a taste for blood, a horny landlady, a vicious attack dog, and the lies she tells herself. Amid these challenges, Jobeth stakes out her prey and runs for her life, continuing the investigation that pulls her into close calls, unexpected allies, and more secrets. But Jobeth has secrets of her own, and only love can excavate them.
This is one helluva of a romp, including a great love story and cool detective tale. Two gals initially from completely opposite ends of the economic spectrum grow and merge to be a fantastic team and astoundingly fine lovers. Accentuating and complementing this story is the author's colossally humorous slant on almost everything at some point in time. I laughed out loud a lot, while being enthralled. Inarguably a winner and gloriously entertaining!
Jobeth O'Brien is one super delightful “gay lesbian”. Phoebe eventually gives her the moniker of J-Bo. In actuality, her name is Grayson O'Reilly. However, early on her real name needs to stay under wraps. There is a curious side to J-Bo's lesbianism which is also not completely revealed until later in the story and it astounded me. Nevertheless, throughout the book she is a very adept lover, an amazing friend, and a solid survivor! Levels and entanglements unfold creating an intriguing pastiche that is a little scary at times but the humorous undercurrents keep everything afloat and on track. J-Bo stole my heart time and again. Thumbs up for Jobeth's gutsiness with great soul!
Phoebe McMasters starts out as a “straight lesbian” as opposed to being a “gay lesbian”. I found this distinction within the book to be quite illuminating. Curiously and moreover, she has a real clunker for a husband. In spite of that, Phoebe is an extraordinary treasure. She eventually makes a solid pass at Jobeth who happens to be the person delivering her paper every day. In addition Phoebe is certifiably wealthy and I think it gave her the chutzpah to engage Jobeth. These two make a really, really fine team starting out with their adorable sexual escapades. The list of accolades I associate with Phoebe is long and impressive. I positively adore Phoebe. Magnificent!
This is a funny, sexy, endearing, heartwarming-to-palpitating, unequivocal delight. I certainly recommend it not be missed. Fantastic!
