Book Review

‘All That Remains’ is set in a futuristic/paranormal world where demons reign, use humans as food, and Nekos – human/cat hybrids - are their slaves. In what looks to be the final volume of the ‘Neko’ series, everything that has been simmering and boiling along comes to a crashing head, worthy of a finale to the longstanding conflict inside the demon society of this world. Collin, the Neko who has loved Demon Prince Adrian for years, is the focus of events, and he is in for a tough ride.

Collin is a Neko, and as such he has no rights in this world. He, like all other Nekos who cross into the human world, is considered the property of his demon master. But Collin is tired of hiding his love for Adrian to protect him against old-fashioned council members afraid loving a Neko will weaken a demon. Above all he needs to stop the rebel demons from killing any demon owning a Neko, and Collin has even run away from Adrian to go through with his plan of infiltrating the rebel organization. The courage that takes is considerable, and the separation is not just emotionally draining but also has serious consequences for his health.

Needless to say, things do not go as expected. The Nekos’ power over their masters turns out to be the real problem, but there are other secrets Collin discovers - and they are worse. Adrian’s life is at stake any way Collin looks at it and when he is captured and joins Adrian in prison, things look pretty bleak. Luckily Adrian has plans of his own…

If you like stories with intrigue and political machinations, if you enjoy reading about men who love each other deeply and have to fight for the recognition of that love, and if you’re looking for a suspenseful read set in an interesting paranormal world that is a fantastic final installment to this exciting series, then you will probably like this novella.
