Forget the rules. He'll make his own.
Dylan's at the end of his rope. If he doesn't figure out how to get out of his pack's required mating run, he's looking at a lifetime of being force-bonded to some old creep who thinks that "omega" really means "slave".
Not. Happening.
The only problem is that there is no way out of the mating run unless he already has a mate. Putting his faith in an old magic ritual to find his soul mate seems like a dumb idea, but when all else fails, what does he have to lose?
By now I'm sure my reputation of loving all things paranormal and shifters has spread far and wide. Okay, that might be a bit of an exaggeration. *grins* However, I do love discovering a new-to-me author especially if the book involves shifters and an entertaining and interesting world. I can honestly say that Cait Forester's post-apocalyptic world where humans, in an attempt to kill off all weres, destroyed the majority of their own population with a plague, had me hooked and wishing the story was longer.
The plague only affected those shifters who had human blood, but it did send the birthrates dropping exponentially. Since omegas are no longer held in as high esteem as they used to be, this has led to most packs taking up the old rituals that have, heretofore, only been used ceremonially in an attempt to force-mate and breed those omegas. This is the dilemma Dylan finds himself in. He’s an omega, and as the pack is calling for a mating run, which basically means he has to evade and fend off all the old, crusty alphas and reach the other side of the grounds the run is held on in order to be safe. Well, safe until they come up with some other crazy idea to try to make him mate.
Dylan is desperate and when he gets information from an anonymous source about an old book of magic that can help him, he's just hopeless enough to try it. Of course, it turns out he has to do the spell during the run, but he'll figure it out, he's determined. Dylan is very surprised at the result of his spell. Surprised and relieved, at least until he hears the caveat and realizes he won't be able to keep his mate.
An interesting story, to say the least. I was distracted by the differing tenses, but I tried to ignore that in favor of the story. The premise of 'All Hallow's Howl' was intriguing and I'm not sure whether the ending was a cliffhanger or if it was to be taken at face value. Regardless, I enjoyed the world building and would have liked to see more of the characters. Perhaps I'll get lucky and the author will write a sequel.
