Kappy and Jason are happily newlywed men relocating from a military base in Massachusetts to Kappy’s childhood home of Honolulu. For Kappy, the move brings up a lot of good and bad memories. And with his husband working a lot, it leaves him to deal alone with his resurrected past.

 

Jason, an Air Bear, is working at the combined Hickham and Pearl Harbor bases as a military police detective on a reactivated cold case. Although Jason’s work is secretive, his private life is spicy, hot, and nothing like anything the normally remote Jason has experienced before.

 

But things are about to get freaky when the target of Jason’s investigation starts stalking him. Jason has much to lose, and now he wonders about Kappy’s assertion that the island spirits—especially some wacky volcano goddess named Pele—will protect him...

 

Book Review

This story is a wonderful combination of a flavor of Hawaii, a tantalizing mystery including a maniacal criminal, and a glimpse into the life of newlyweds who are very much in love with each other. The little details of people, places, and Hawaiian beliefs held me captive, as is always the case with A.J. Llewellyn’s stories set anywhere in the islands. From the superstitions about taking pork with you when driving along certain highways to the mysterious appearances of Madame Pele, they all contribute to the colorful tapestry that makes up the background of this novella.

Kappy and Jason have recently gotten married and are moving back to Honolulu where Kappy grew up, and Jason works as an Air Bear - a military police detective in charge of cold cases that someone higher up the hierarchy has decided need to be solved. The job is secretive, and Jason can’t tell Kappy anything about it until everything gets just slightly out of hand and the problem of a nasty criminal goes from cold to burning hot. Throughout it is very clear the men love each other deeply and take any and all opportunities for some hot man-on-man action - even going so far as allowing themselves the fantasy of a threesome. But that is just for fun, and as hot as it is, they only want each other.

If you like spicy mysteries where finding and dealing with the bad guy is important for more than one reason, if two men who can’t keep their hands off each other are your thing, and if you’re looking for a read that is as action-packed and mysterious as it is hot and entertaining, then you will probably like this exotic tale of justice finally done as much as I did.
