And then they lived happily ever after…

Sometimes Joshua Stone thinks he’s died and gone to heaven. How else can he explain Michael’s love for him? And now they’re living together… in a real relationship. This is the stuff of fairy tales, a love like other people take for granted.

Sure, they have their moments, what couple doesn’t? But a small doubt lingers in Joshua’s heart. Can this really be true? Can a gorgeous man like Michael really love someone like Joshua—the guy with cerebral palsy, who’s helpless without his walker or his tricycle to get him around?

Michael senses Joshua’s worries, but there’s nothing he can do to dispel them because that would mean revealing his secret—and he’s not ready for that. Their mutual secrets hang between them like time bombs waiting to explode. They might not survive the inevitable blast.

Book Review

What happens after the happy end of one book can be a great starting point for a sequel, and in Joshua and Michael’s case, I was definitely still curious at the end of ‘Despite the Odds’. The differences between them and the mutual doubts and self-doubts were significant and no matter how much they love each other, day-to-day life together is bound to bring up both old and new fears. Watching them deal (or not deal) with the problems was heartbreaking in places, but seeing how they managed to deal with what was happening and learn how to do it together, as a team, was very rewarding as well. This is a story about growth and trust, and I loved every minute of it.

Michael continues to feel useless because he can’t read. He thinks he is an idiot, not good enough for Joshua in the long run, and is basically waiting to be kicked out. His secret project leads to misunderstandings, him trying to cover up by lying, and even more fear that the relationship won’t last. Add some nasty colleagues at work and Michael’s plate is pretty full. But he loves Joshua to distraction and is determined to keep showing him that, in Michael’s eyes, Joshua’s disability does not define him.

Joshua has his own set of worries. His biggest fear is that Michael will realize he is far too good for Joshua and will walk away to be with someone much better looking and not disabled. His suspicions about where Michael is when he says he is working late almost kill Joshua, and by the time his mother calls him with bad news about Joshua’s horrible stepfather, Joshua knows he is heading for disaster.

If you want to know how Joshua and Michael deal with being in a relationship, if lots of angst and self-doubt are your thing, and if you’re looking for a read that is emotional, touching,  and very sweet, then you will probably like this novella. I think it’s a wonderful continuation of a great love story.
