Bartholome would give anything to get his young lover Rene to stop running away from him. Years ago, he made a stupid mistake, letting the rest of their wolf pack come between them, but he knows better now.
Rene's not sure he can believe Barthe will ever want him. Add to their dilemma Barthe's brother Bastien and a werewolf caught half shifted, and Barthe and Remy have a real mess on their hands. Can they come back together before they lose their love forever?
First Edition published by Torquere Press in October, 2013.
This is a story about mistakes and how hard it can be to make up for them, especially when the consequences have almost destroyed two lives. Barthe may realize that he has pushed away his mate for too long, but that doesn't mean everything is fine once he goes to apologize. Rene is too hurt to just give in, and has tried too hard to build his own life to trust Barthe has suddenly changed his mind. Both men have a lot to learn, but Barthe is the one who needs to grow if he wants to have the life with his mate he's always dreamed of.
How would you feel if your mate, the man you adore and thought would be yours to love, rejects you? Not once, but again and again? Then finally, he makes you the laughing stock of the entire pack? Rene hates it, but his self-esteem is so low that he decides to run rather than fight for Barthe's acceptance. Rene believes he isn’t good enough for Barthe anyway, since he was found by the pack, abandoned by his own parents. I really felt for him as he tried to stay away from Barthe, thinking he is protecting himself against more pain and disappointment. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth.
Barthe, I am sorry to say, is a bit of an idiot. Yes, he is a lot older than Rene and thinks the guy needs to “grow up” and learn some stuff before they can be together. But is that any reason to send him away and publicly humiliate him? I think it serves Barthe right that he spends years trying to find Rene again. The only problem with that is that Rene suffers as well, if not more than Barthe, while they figure things out.
The final reunion is very touching, and Rene's attempts to protect himself even then broke my heart. The two of them are very hot together and clearly love each other even if it takes them way too long to admit it.
If you like stories about mated shifters who try to deny their bond with awful consequences, if you enjoy reading about stubborn men who can’t seem to admit they need each other, and if you're looking for an emotionally charged, hot read, then you will probably like this short story.
