Conall lives for his clan. His sense of duty and love of family has put him in harm’s way more times than he can count in his seventeen years, but also got him out of it. He follows his Da’s lead in everything…even when it leads to murder and war. When Conall wakes up after one such battle in the care of a stranger, with his Da nowhere near, he’s forced to change his ideas about whom he can trust.
This story is also included in Plaid Nights Anthology.
Set in 15th century Scotland, this story is about the consequences of war between enemy clans as much as about the battle between the old powers of witchcraft and the new Christian religion spreading at that time. The two main characters come from opposing sides, yet fate seems to have thrown them together for a purpose.
Conall is only seventeen, but at that time in history he was considered a man, He has fought a few bloody battles in his life, the most recent one instigated by his father. He has never thought about the right or the wrong of what his father was up to – until he is confronted with Eoghann’s opinion. For maybe the first time in his life Conall hears an opposing point of view, and has to pay attention to it. After all, Eoghann is not only in charge of nursing him back to health, but also makes comments that cause Conall to reconsider his previous attitude. Added to the strange dreams Conall has, this makes for a mysterious, mystical atmosphere and an appropriately dark ambiance. Thankfully, Conall’s also wounded friend has an eye for the important things and makes Conall realize what he has to do.
If you like historicals with a gritty setting, if men in kilts appeal to you, and if you’re looking for a read that transports you back in time as much as it makes you realize the power of love between men was present even in the distant past, then you will probably like this short story.
