Prince Colin of Sendorra would have been the spare instead of the heir if fate hadn’t intervened. Like his father and forefathers, Colin is expected to marry and father a child or his principality reverts to Spain at the time of his death. Filling the royal nursery with healthy babies seems easy enough until Princess Charlotte—his childhood friend and intended bride—breaks off their engagement.

Nobel Prize winner—and powerful gray witch—Alain de Gris isn’t looking for love. Science and research have taken center stage for years until he walks into a club and lays eyes on Colin, thirteen years his junior.

Bisexual by nature, Colin seeks to avoid another engagement repeat by shying away from a same-sex relationship. There are no acceptable alternatives to provide legitimate offspring if he follows his heart.

But Colin can’t stay away from Alain and the witch finds him irresistible. Ignoring the absolutes isn’t easy when a legacy is in jeopardy. And while magic may offer a solution, it could also create more problems.

Book Review

This is a world that feels very much like our actual reality, yet it is far different thanks to the existence of magic and male pregnancy, though the latter is extremely risky. Added to the setting in Sendorra – a small, fictional country in Southern Europe – the need for the main character to produce an heir, and family politics that are royally scr*wed up, it makes for exciting reading. Plus there is a very hot and somewhat mysterious gray witch who wants nothing to do with a prince, never mind all the entanglements of various kinds that come with a relationship to someone who is constantly in the public spotlight. The result is a read somewhere between a fairy tale, an action/adventure with several snags, and a complicated romance.

Colin is the crown prince, and used to getting what he wants and his orders being followed – but that is not what happens when he is around Alain. He also has a few secrets, and opening up does not come easy to him. And then there is the whole issue around having to provide an heir, everyone expecting him to marry a woman since male pregnancies are somewhat dangerous, and since Colin’s older twin brother was stillborn, Colin is not willing to risk a repeat. Fate seems to have other ideas though…

Alain is a gray witch, one looking for balance, and though he comes from a powerful line of witches, he has renounced his heritage so he can be independent and “modernize” witchcraft. He is aware of coven politics but he chooses to stay away, so he can devote his life to research, science, and changing his craft for the benefit of humankind. He has already won a Nobel Prize for finding a drug to prevent Alzheimer’s, and he has no intention of resting on his laurels, so to speak. Relationships have taken a distant second place in his priorities – until he meets Colin in a club.

Colin and Alain are not a match made in heaven. All they wanted was one night, yet they cannot stay away from each other. The world (and their own best intentions) tells them to forget each other, but, in the end, the heart wants what the heart wants. With both men trying to hide some of the truth about their backgrounds and not wanting to admit they are falling for each other, the situation soon becomes a tangled mess in more than one way.

Some of Colin’s family members also tell part of the story, and it made for an interesting contrast to see their somewhat more mature point of view as well as get insight into the darker plans one of them makes. Getting their opinion on what Crown Prince Colin was up to put everything in perspective, not to mention the added layer of depth their knowledge of the past gave me. Several other secondary characters play a lesser role, but each of them had their own agenda and added to the complications. It made for a colorful cast in a very creative world.

If you like problematic romances between powerful men, if warlocks, magic, and ancient family feuds are your thing, and if you’re looking for a read set in a fascinating world filled with deceit, prejudice, revelations, and subterfuge at every turn, then you will probably like this novel as much as I do. The excellent worldbuilding as well as curiosity about what is next for Colin and Alain definitely have me wanting more!
