Seven-year-old Markie is determined to shine this Christmas. He's decided his light can't be hidden any longer, but not everyone in his life is supportive.

This Christmas, he's looking for a miracle. Maybe if the family's Nativity can host a miracle, then it might spill over onto him and his family.

Book Review

Miracles come in all shapes and sizes, but the one seven-year-old Markie wishes for is one that will challenge an entire family. His dad rejected Markie and the possibility of Markie being gay at Christmas a year earlier, then he left Markie, his older sister, and his mom. A year later they are still having a hard time, and even though Markie is afraid, he wants his dad back. The story of what happens when Christmas comes back around and the family has to make a decision is very emotional, full of hope, and had me hanging on every word.

Markie is a very special little boy. He loves sparkly clothes, his long hair, and wants nothing more than to wear a pretty dress for Christmas dinner. Markie also misses his dad, but it still hurts because his father rejected his “gender nonsense’ last year, then stormed out of the house, and has not been back since. But Markie figures he can always wish for a Christmas miracle. He has already named two of the figures in the nativity set (a shepherd and one of the wise men) and insists they belong together. Their “romance” is a wonderful sub story that had me smiling all the way.

Markie’s sister has a slightly more grown-up perspective, but she fully supports Markie and is very careful not to get her hopes up when Dad calls to meet Mom for coffee right before Christmas. Everyone wants Dad back, but will the counseling he did and his change of heart be real and last through the reveal of Markie’s dress at Christmas dinner?
If you like stories where families face a challenge when one of the children comes out at a very young age, if you want to watch a little boy grow and get not one but two miracles for Christmas, and if you’re looking for a read that has lots of obstacles and drama, yet offers a sweet and emotionally fulfilling ending, then you will probably like this novella as much as I do. It’s adorable!
