Dodge City bank clerk Gordon Howsley leads a life of quiet routine, each evening feasting on the sight of rugged men in the Long Branch Saloon before going home to wife and children. A welcome breach occurs when outlaw Tom Stoddard robs the bank and takes Howsley hostage. Holed up in a remote hideout, Stoddard discovers Howsley to be a most willing captive and the two embark on a sexual adventure in which Howsley sees his dreams of manly satisfaction fulfilled at last. But when the law intrudes and Stoddard is jailed, how far will Howsley go to be reunited with the man he loves?
I was interested in reading this new to me author, Dale Chase, as the description for 'A Hard Loving Man' brought back some nostalgia. I grew up with a father and grandfather who both loved Westerns and I inherited that love. My grandpa had a small used book store in his basement, or so it seemed, and some of those dime store novels I read over and over again. Cracking this book open, it didn't take me long to get my brain firmly on board with an old Western story.
Well, now, I can't imagine what kind of life Gordon leads as a sedate banker by day, and going home to his wife and two children. But, not before he allows himself thirty minutes to stop in at the saloon and have a couple of beers surrounded by all that beautiful manliness. His boring, follow-the-rules, life doesn't preclude Gordon from a very active fantasy life and he indulges often. When Gordon is abducted by a masked bank robber, he thinks his dreams have come true. Hiding away with a gorgeous man can certainly lead to all sorts of adventures. And Gordon and Tom explore them all, until the law shows up and arrests Tom.
What is Gordon to do? The law and town members believe him to be innocent, not knowing he was actively participating in sexual adventures with a criminal. But Gordon can't go back to that life he led, not now that he's experienced true freedom and pleasure. The choice he makes is liable to change his entire life, but it was interesting to watch Gordon discover himself and learn to enjoy just being alive. The ending was very strong and reminded me that in the Old West there wasn't a lot of time for deliberating. You made a decision and acted upon it, usually within a split second. A very good book that I enjoyed quite a lot. If you're a fan of Westerns then this might be for you.
