Past and present exist side by side as the ghost of a young poet seeks to protect the family living in the house he haunts.

Robert ‘Robbie' Clavell, a young Victorian poet, is murdered by a jealous competitor, but his murderer, not content with ending Robbie's life, also invokes an ancient curse that forces his spirit to remain earthbound.

When Jamie Barrett, a dancer in London's West End, receives a phone call from his mother telling him of strange knocking noises and furniture moving about, he travels home to Manchester to investigate and give support to his mother and his twelve year old niece, Laura.

Advised to contact a psychic for help, Jamie meets Kevin Singleton, and despite the seriousness of what they discover, the two men find a mutual attraction. Kevin explains to Jamie and his mother that their recent family tragedies had opened a portal allowing base spirits to enter and feed off of Laura's youthful and vibrant energy.

Kevin is able to make a psychic connection with Robbie who tells him that George Russell, his murderer, is the one responsible for the upheaval in the Barrett household. But when Robbie tries to help Kevin exorcise Russell's spirit, Russell summons up an even darker force - one that could not only destroy the house and everyone in it, but ensure Robbie's spirit will never find his way home.

Book Review

Oddly, whenever I hear about someone hunting ghosts, the theme song to the movie, 'Ghost Busters' starts playing in my head; but the ghosts in 'The Ghost Story' by J.P. Bowie are far removed from the comical entities seen in the film. With the exception of Robbie's ghost, who is there to help protect the family, they are frightening, destructive, and malevolent. When Jamie Barrett calls upon psychic Kevin Singleton, to discern what paranormal events are plaguing him and his family, he also opens a portal which leads to love.

Jamie's sweet, loving nature endeared him to me right away, especially in the concern he showed for his mother and niece. I loved the way he put his life on hold in order to be with them when they needed him. Jamie's loyalty and openness is also displayed in his relationship with Kevin, particularly in dealing with the ghosts. Even though he's afraid, he refuses to let Kevin face them alone regardless of the consequences. It's amazing how well their energies blend in and out of bed.

Kevin is an interesting character. I admired him for his fearlessness and determination. When he sets his mind on something he makes it happen, enlisting bravery and self-assuredness in the process. Kevin is also loving and considerate. He and Jamie make a wonderful pair; they are a great example of what can be accomplished by couples if both are willing to cooperate.

I was fascinated in the whole paranormal investigation process, especially since some of it was inspired by real life events. Reaching into the unknown takes a lot of courage, an open mind, and a lot of innovative thinking. Paranormal research is not an exact science to say the least and I really liked how J.P. Bowie represented the process, particularly in emphasizing that all cases are different and must be approached with that in mind. My favorite part of the story was how it showed that good is more powerful than evil and that love makes us even stronger in our efforts to overcome it. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good love story combined with paranormal events and the quest for solutions to the issues they cause. Thanks, J.P., for an exciting, although slightly spooky, love story.
