After his last disastrous relationship, Joseph Ford has absolutely no interest in getting attached again. Concentrating on working as a trauma nurse and keeping his life as simple as possible are his only goals. Unfortunately, his plans could be derailed by the charming, sexy Nash.
Things are looking up for paramedic Ridley Nash when he transfers to Station 217. He gets along with the crew, likes his partner, and is finally on a team willing to accept him—gay and all. It’s everything he’s always wanted, but when he meets Ford, Nash knows his life is about to get very interesting.
As Ford and Nash find themselves stuck in the middle of a homicide case, things become more complicated. For the last year, the mutilated bodies of teenage boys have been showing up all over downtown. With no leads, the police are getting desperate. One of the victims is found alive, and he’s the best chance the police have to catch the killer—if only they can get him to talk.
Will Nash be able to catch Ford when he falls, or is there too much standing in their way to make it work?
I more than enjoyed my first venture into Cate Ashwood's world of first responders, forensic pathology, and murder so it's obvious I wasn't about to miss out on the second installment in her 'Zero Hour' series. They haven't caught the serial killer yet and I've got to know more about that. Plus, I was hoping I'd see more of Adam and Dex because I love it when authors incorporate the people from previous installments into the latest book. It intensifies my feelings of family and the emotional connection I tend to make with characters. Yes, I'm a sap, and I don't care.
Ford intrigued me when I met him in Adam and Sam's story. It was so obvious how lonely and sad he was, and that he was hiding something even from Sam, his best friend. Ford is a dedicated trauma nurse, picking up extra shifts and giving 110 percent all the time. When he meets Nash the attraction is definitely there but for some reason Ford resists. Ford becomes very emotionally attached to Joel, the young boy who survived the serial killer and was found holding his friend's dead body. It's no wonder he's not inclined to talk to anyone.
"I kept falling deeper and deeper into whatever it was we had, and I got completely lost in it. I hated who I was with him, and it took me so long to figure out that I was absolutely miserable.”
Poor Ford. Manipulated and used by a very-in-the-closet colleague, Ford is still trying to get over the pain he suffered and the feelings of shame that he allowed thinking he was finally in an "adult relationship." Nash figures out very quickly how skittish Ford is, but Nash is willing to have the patience and wait him out, all while showing Ford what a healthy partnership really is. When Ford is devastated by loss, Nash takes care of him and Ford is overwhelmed by this amazing man who cares for him. Too bad Ford overthinks things and almost ends up losing Nash.
An emotional thrill ride that I couldn't put down! Ford and Nash were perfect together and I adored watching them fall in love. Better than that, though, was the total coming-out-of-left-field in regards to the serial killer. I loved how the author wrote this and I can't wait to read the next book. I have my suspicions but I could be completely wrong.
