Hot damn, what more could a country boy want? Bass Pro Shop is finally opening in Tennessee. Nick plans to check out all twelve indoor acres chock-full of hunting, fishing, and boating in the Memphis Pyramid on the Mississippi River.
City boy Sandy wonders yet again how he let himself get talked into attending a grand opening for a hick hunting store. His geeky heart prefers the energy of the city. Little does he know all that is going to change due to a freakishly tall glass elevator—and Nick, the high-school crush who’s suddenly taking a second look at him.
A moment of panic while trapped in the elevator leads to a spark neither expected. Getting out is the least of the challenges they’ll face if they want to try to put their differences aside and find out if love is possible between a city boy and a country boy.

“Opposites Attract” is a time-honored saying that, apparently, some psychological studies claim to have confirmed. Not that I need their validation to know that it’s one of the story tropes I adore, and “country boy falls for city boy” is a particular favorite of mine. Added to the fact that Nick, the country boy, is also a jock and Sandy, the city boy, is a nerd, plus they have a none-too-favorable history - and let me say that this novella looked ever more promising to me the more I read of the blurb. Oh, and the setting is in and around Memphis, Tennessee, and, like with all the books in the ‘States of Love’ series, there is a taste of the location, the people who live and work there, and some of the things to do if you’re ever tempted to visit. I’ll just mention the height of city life combined with some great outdoors adventures…
Nick is an outdoors kind of guy. Sandy loves his creature comforts. Nick likes to go hunting, fishing, and boating, and his ideal vacation includes camping and hiking. Sandy prefers visiting restaurants and drinking wine to hunting down and killing his food, and his perfect getaway is more likely to have running water and electricity. Nick can’t wait to visit the new Bass Pro Shop’s opening day, but Sandy has to be talked into attending by his best friend. Oh, and they both remember each other from high school where Sandy coached Nick, but they did not part on the best of terms – and that is putting it nicely.
Not an ideal beginning?
Just wait until they’re both trapped in the glass elevator at the Memphis pyramid and are forced to speak to each other. Actually, talking isn’t all they do, and to their shock and my delight, they end up staying in touch. Dating. Trying to figure out if they have enough in common to make a go of the relationship both have been wanting, if not necessarily with each other. What follows is an unusual courtship, increasing passion, and the realization that you only need to be “a country boy at heart” to get along with a lover of the great outdoors.
If you like young men who discover that memories can be deceiving, if you’re a fan of “country” meets “city” and decides they like it, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read full of funny situations and encounters, lots of adventures in Memphis and Tennessee, and a couple who are willing to push their own boundaries to be together, then you will probably like this heartwarmingly funny novella.
