Angela has put her dreams of living an out and proud life as a transgender man on hold because of her husband, who can't understand. But a chance encounter at a bar changes everything. Rocky sees Drake for the brown eyed handsome man he is, not the plumbing between his legs. Can Rocky convince Angela to let go of her fears and embrace life as Drake?
Being accepted for who we are is something we all want, but finding this acceptance is so much more difficult for some than it is for others. This story about a 'brown eyed handsome man' illustrates the particular difficulties a trans man can face. Old life and new revelations constantly clash, just like inner image and outer appearance are not in agreement with each other. This story is a snippet from Drake's life, the part where he first realizes acceptance may be possible after all. In that sense, while many of the underlying issues remain, the story gives great hope that his situation may change – one day.
Drake may have won the 'battle' with himself about who he is inside and who he wants to be, one day, on the outside as well. But the external world is another matter. For one thing he is married to a man who is straight and cannot imagine his wife transitioning into a man without him rejection this 'new' person. While that is understandable, and needs to be respected, even if it id regrettable, it makes Drake's life even more difficult. He used to love this guy and now has to face the rejection of who he really is from a man he trusted.
Understandably, that undermines Drake's self-confidence and this brings up the second external 'battle' he has to fight: that of the fear of never finding acceptance as his true self from anyone. After all, if the man who said he loved him (even though he was a woman at the time) cannot deal with him, who can? The message of great hope is that a guy Drake runs into does give him that acceptance, an with that, the hope to go on, and continue the path Drake's inner pride requires of him
If you want to read a story with some great insights into what true acceptance can feel like, if you want to know more about what some trans men may go through, and if you're looking for a message of hope and self-affirmation in a situation that may seem hopeless, you will probably like this story as much as I did.
