Let's start with you telling us a little bit about yourself, Tara.
I’m Tara Lain. I write The Beautiful Boys of Romance - my yummy, unique, charismatic, and sometimes quirky heroes that I love so much. A lot of people call my books “sweet” despite all the hawt sex because I believe in true love and enjoy giving my guys their HEAs. I live in Laguna Beach, California, which is a fun place to set books since its right by the ocean and has a wildly eclectic population of artists, surfers, rich, and poor. It’s also a very gay-friendly town. When I’m not writing books, I own an advertising and public relations agency which I enjoy a lot. I’m married to my soul mate and live with my soul dog. I’ve been lucky enough to live and travel all over the world both as an Army brat child and later as an inquisitive adult. Whenever I wish I had started writing earlier, I remember that I might never have taken all those wonderful trips if I’d had deadlines and conferences to sneak into my work life instead of world travel, so I’m content.
What would people be most surprised to learn about you?
I love snakes and keep threatening to write a snake shifter romance. Two hot male snake shifters? YUM! Many readers do not agree. LOL.
When did you start writing, is it something you've always been interested in, or did it develop later in life?
Like most authors, I wrote my first book at five. But I’ve made my living as a non-fiction writer my whole adult life - which actually kept me from writing fiction for a long time. I couldn’t imagine writing all day and then writing at night and on the weekends too. But then I found erotic romance and now I happily write allll the time! Still, I came late to the party.
Has it been everything you thought it would be or not?
I plunged into writing novels purely for fun and almost on a whim so I had few expectation. But I have strong business and marketing instincts so, after my first book was published, I took writing seriously. I realize I chose to make writing a business and I can choose to make it a hobby any time I want. Having two more-than-fulltime jobs, is hard, but I love it.
How did it feel when you realized that your very first book was going to be published?
I was thrilled! Since I’ve had a lot of articles and other work published, it wasn’t brand new, but it was a unique sense of satisfaction.
What's your favorite part of writing a book?
I love coming up with the ideas and I adore writing endings. Drawing the threads together, illuminating the meaning, giving the characters that happiness we all yearn for, causing a tear to fall. I love it!
Do you get time to read for pleasure? If so, which books do you enjoy?
I read every day (often just a little) and I mostly read in my own genre - male/male romance both contemporary and paranormal. I tend to enjoy the same type of books I write - romantic, relatively low angst, with a very happy ending.
Are there any other genres you'd be interested in writing?
I have ideas for a dystopian scifi that I will likely write one of these days.
Please tell us a little about your most recent release.
My new release is called The Pack or the Panther. It’s male/male paranormal and my first werewolf book, but of course I had to get a feline in there too. It grew out of the idea of “arranged gay marriage” and exploded into World War Wolf! Like all of my books, it explores the questions of authenticity and living an authentic life versus living out of the tapes in our head. It’s the first book in Tales of the Harker Pack. The second book in the series, Wolf in Gucci Loafers, will be released April 16th, 2014.
What can we look forward to in the future from you?
Oops. I jumped the gun. Wolf in Gucci Loafers, the second book in my Tales of the Harker Pack, will be out April 16, 2014. I also have my first male/male New Adult novel called Outing the Quarterback which will be released sometime this year. I’m creating a new male/male contemporary series and will also write another Balls to the Wall book this year. There will be more, I just don’t know which yet.
Anything you want to say to your readers?
My readers are the best! Imagine being able to create my quirky, romantic stories and have someone else like them! I always try to deliver my best not just because of me, but because of you. I’m constantly delighted and honoured when someone buys my books. Thank you!
Tara Lain's three most recent releases:
The Pack or the Panther
Cole Harker, son of an alpha werewolf, is bigger and more powerful than most wolves, tongue-tied in groups, and gay. For twenty-four years, he’s lived to please his family and pack—even letting them promise him in marriage to female werewolf Analiese to secure a pack alliance and help save them from a powerful gangster who wants their land. Then Cole meets Analiese’s half-brother, panther shifter Paris Marketo, and for the first time, Cole wants something for himself.
When Analiese runs off to marry a human, Cole finally has a chance with Paris, but the solitary cat rejects him, the pack, and everything it represents. Then Cole discovers the gangster wants Paris too and won’t rest until he has him. What started as a land dispute turns into World War Wolf! But the bigger fight is the battle between cats and dogs.
F.A.S.T. Balls (Balls to the Wall 5)
Firefighter and surfing champion, Jerry Wallender, looks like a hero to the world, but he can’t see it. He keeps falling for these intellectual guys who end up making him feel dumb and unneeded. On top of that, Mick Cassidy, super-gorgeous firefighter and total homophobe, makes Jerry’s life miserable with his slurs. Then one day Mick’s nice to Jerry and, at the Firefighter’s Ball, Jerry offers a helping hand and ends up with a hand-job. What the hell is going on?
Mick Cassidy is great with fighting fires and solving math problems but rotten with people. Raised by a gay-hating preacher, Mick’s carefully constructed world of gay bashing starts to crumble when he meets Jerry, the nicest, kindest man he’s ever known. Mick’s never wanted a woman and can’t stop thinking about sex with Jerry. In fact, he can’t stop doing it. Does that make him gay? And if he’s gay, what happens to his whole life? A hook-up between sweet Jerry and mean Mick might be total disaster -- or the smartest idea Jerry ever had.
Cataclysmic Shift (The Aloysius Tales 3)
Super cat, Aloysius, may be the most powerful witch's familiar in the world, but when he takes a blast at the hand of an evil witch he loses it all -- power, memory, and his feline form -- to become the ethereal human beauty, Alain Bellarose. When Alain wakes up naked on the floor surrounded by dogs and cats, his eyes first set upon Luke Elliott, the handsome and mysterious veterinarian. Suddenly, the prospect of being human doesn't seem so bad.
Luke has a lot to hide and he likes animals way more than people, but he can't resist the flamboyant boy who washes his face with the side of his hand and tries to lick his own privates!
The loss of Aloysius depletes Witch Master Killian Barth's power and that of his “secret weapon” Sammy and leaves their coven sitting ducks for two very nasty women. When Alain discovers that he's really a powerful cat, he's faced with the ultimate choice: to protect his community, or surrender his power and stay with the man he loves.
Excerpt from The Pack or the Panther:
Cole’s lips turned up just a smidge. “Uh, you look good. I wasn’t expecting to see you.”
“What the fuck?” He threw his hands in the air and collapsed in a wing-back chair. “You came to my show. Of course you expected to see me.”
“Uh, I mean I didn’t expect to see you off stage.”
Paris frowned. What kind of game was this? “What in the hell are you talking about? You came here to get me.”
“What do you mean ‘no’?”
“I didn’t come here for you at all. I remembered that you said Eliazer came here to see you, and it was the only place I knew to look for him. That’s why I came.”
“Not for me?” He wanted to scream and he wanted to cry. Which one would win?
“No. You said to leave you alone.”
“You son of a bitch!” Paris leaped out of the chair and hurled himself across the room at Cole with his fingers extended like claws. He hit the wolf like a missile and scratched at his face. “You bastard. You sucked me in and got me involved with your ridiculous pack crap.”
“Wait. Hold on.” Cole wrapped a huge arm around his middle, pulled Paris’s back against his chest, and held him with his feet off the floor. The big, dumb, bastard!
Paris kicked his feet, which was humiliating. “Let me go.”
“And let you scratch me? No way.”
Paris shook his head wildly. Frustration. “Why did you—? Why didn’t you—? Shit!”
“Uh-uh. You’re just a confused kitty.”
He had to stop this. Heat pushed behind his eyes. Damn. What was going on? The words flew out. “You didn’t come for me.”
For a second Cole said nothing. “You said you didn’t want me. Hell, you practically tore down your parents’ office door proving it.”
Paris frowned. “That’s right. I don’t.”
Cole loosened his grip just a little and let Paris’s feet hit the floor, though his strong arms still held Paris’s body tight. It felt way too good. “So why should I come looking for you?”
“Because you want me?”
“What gave you your first clue?” His voice held laughter.
“The nine-inch steel rod sticking in my butt?”
A big hand slid down the front of Paris’s robe. “Oh, like the tentpole I see you’re sporting?”
Cole’s fingers brushed the silk robe aside and closed around Paris’s erection. “Tell me you don’t want me.”
“I don’t.” But his hips were thrusting his cock into Cole’s hand. Liar hips.
Cole pressed tight against Paris’s butt. That big cock nestled between his ass cheeks. More!
Oh hell. He was burning up! He turned in Cole’s loosened embrace and grabbed his face, pushing his mouth hard against those carved lips. He reached down, managed to pull Cole’s zipper past that hard-on from heaven, and stood on tiptoe so he could rub their dicks together.
Cole pulled back, gasping. “I don’t have long. Lindsey is outside waiting for me.”
A low growl trembled past Paris’s lips. Shit, where did that come from?
Cole’s eyes widened. “Linds? He’s just my friend. But Eliazer is out there. I don’t want to put Lindsey in danger.”
Paris heard his own breath, hot and hard. “Fuck me quick. I can’t stand it if you don’t.”
